How to Prioritize an Internal Application Performance When Accessing over OpenVPN?

Hello,

I need to prioritize our internal Accounting Application (Sage 50 Accounting) to increase the application performance when accessed over remote connection using OpenVPN.

We can connect with no issue to the application over the VPN. But it turns extremely slow.

We need to prioritize this application remote access.

If we access the application on the remote server using AnyDesk, the application performance is very good. Only when working over the VPN session it turns extremely slow, turning imposible to work over the application.

How we can do that and what Apps under Untangle / Arista we need to configure?

I would HIGHLY advice against doing this over a VPN, this is the best way to corrupt the database. IMO what we do is dedicate a machine that is local to, that you can RDP to over the vpn and do the work.

dashpuppy is exactly on the spot with this advise. I've seen similar issue with QuickBooks over VPN. The best option is a local PC resource access to run the app locally to the database.

Even when I understand your suggestions, they are not exactly what we wanted to hear!!

One of the reasons (if not the only one), our customers decide to implement Untangle is for them to be able to remotely work with their local applications (sales, inventory, accounting, etc.). So, if the final recommendation is similar to keep using AnyDesk (because not all of them have RDP licenses), it is going to be easy for them to decide not to use Untangle in order to save money.

I am referring to mid-size - small business which not always want to implement Untangle for security reasons (even when security must be their main goal, but that is life and the way things are).

The reason behind this thread, is to learn how to fix this type of issues, so when our Untangle's customers present them to us, we know exactly how to proceed. So, if we are not able to provide a feasible solution, they will understand we cheated them with Untangle.

TRUST ME !! you will see way more "SHIT" from the company when they say OH CRAP our main database is corrupt HOW COME!! You explain to them THIS IS 100% BAD practice, going around it is a BAD idea!! I straight up tell my cleints NO we don't do this BUT hey we can take this little machine that isn't used and setup a RDP sesson on it for you to Remote to etc etc.

Trust us, we know your shoes i wear them every day i go through what you are, there is a point where you say NO we won't and or I won't get this resolved like this I will do it properly.

BTW throwing untanlge under the bus saying its their fault is the issue, is like not true. You will have this issue with ALL brands of firewalls.

OpenVPN to protect RDP access or something similar prevents you from needing to 2FA that authentication surface, and drastically simplifies deployment of remote desktop access.

All WITHOUT adding some arbitrary cloud dependency to the mix that is just another source of issues. (ahem... anydesk or anything like it that isn't RDP)

Oh... and all this is FREE since the OpenVPN module doesn't cost anything other than the hardware to run it on. And remote desktop is built into the Windows desktops already. If your SMB client doesn't care enough about themselves to see the value in all of that, honestly...

Well there's just no other way to put this...

They're better off simply NOT being your client anymore. There are very few things I put my foot down on, this is one of them.
