  • How to use VPN

This might be a stupid question, I tried to look up the information on this site, but how do you use UT VPN to connect to your network from home? I set the UT as a VPN server, sent the email to myself, installed the setup.exe that came with it, used the OpenVPN connection and connected, I and see on the server that I am connected, but how do I access files? Is there another piece of software that you are supposed to install to connect to files and computers? Please help.

    Hi wpalmerton,

Have you exported the resources in OpenVPN.

In that case if you have a SMB server try start - Run "\\iptofilserver\"
Then you should see the shares.

Not sure if we have a SMB server, we do have a server that is being used as a filer server along with a few other roles.

How do you access the files locally?

By using shared drive letters, each person and groups have permission that allow them to certain folders.

Then i guess you use the SMB protocol.

So do you know the ip to the file server?
Do you map them with a login script?

Yes, I know the IP address of the file server, and I’m pretty sure the mapping is done with a log on script, not sure on that one. Since all new users already have them mapped I am guessing it’s done by a script to have it already set up on their pc?

I would check with the admin/person in charge of the shares.
And then ask if they allow mapping them over VPN.

                And how to map them.

I’m the new IT person, many things were outsourced before.

                    Ok..
Are you in a Windows AD environment?
In that case check what login script your ad user use.
Then locate the login script (usally \\servername\netlogon\) in the login scriptt you should be able to fin where the network share is located.

Now on the VPN computer you will have to mount/connect to that share.
                    Are you exporting DNS?
In that case you can use the Hostname otherwise you will have use IP.

As your home computer aren't registered on the domain you will have to connect with diffrent username and password. (and there use your ad credential)
