  • missing OpenVPN users

I have had this problem 2 times now.

The untangle box is running normally. then I started to get users calling me up saying they were no longer able to establish the VPN connection. when I loged onto the untangle box and looked for the users that were contacting me, the open VPN user was no longer there. but from what I can see there is no uniform way the VPN connections have been deleted, the one that I use myself seems to have been deleted both times, so its not first-in first-out and not particular names as some of the other previously deleted names are still available. the first time it happened was when the update for the new interface from an independent interface to the web interface, which is what I blamed it on, so I turned off the automatic updates, but this most resent occurrence, I have not been able to think of why it did what it did

If anyone could help I would be very grateful

How many users do you have? Does just one user drop or several or most or all?

I have no idea - thats a new one to me.
You could probably check the database and see if its a UI rendering issue and they are still there. (but then they'd be able to connect)

    how old is this box?

we currently have 35 users, and I am unsure how many have actually went missing. so far today I have noticed 9 users that went missing this time, but that number could change as they get home to do admin work after a day on the road. will go and check the database on the actual system to see if it has any more information

I only set the box up about 5 months ago, may be the hardware is a little under spec as it is only a 1.6Ghz AMD k7 with 512 ram and 120Bg hdd

I am now just getting to see the extent of the problem, it is now looking like almost 1/4 of the users went missing. back up to 39 accounts and this seems to tally up with the number of config files in /etc/openvpn/ccd/. Haven't looked to much into openVPN in the past so not sure which other files are used in the config or what the webUI gets all its info from.

still a possibility that some other users are still missing there connection but just haven't reported it.

I think I may have found out what the problem was... fortnightly the hard way. the system running untangle had a hard drive failure the other day, I have a feeling that the loss of users was just down to data corruption although surprisingly it seems openVPN was the only application to be affected by the inevitable failure. The system is now running again with a new drive and improved ventilation...

vip32, that could be the issue.

we've seen hard drive issues cause some really bizarre behavior...
