  • Answer to the Reports not emailing you.

Scenario: Reports are no longer being emailed to you. This might have worked on previous versions.

Solution: First, you will need to check your email setting on the Untangle. Yes, we know that on the previous version this might have worked.
If you do not have your own mail server, you will need to select send email directly. Please note, some ISPs block sending out SMTP so this might not work. You might want to try this setting:

If you do have your own mail server, you will need to select use specified SMTP server, put the IP address of the email server. (Some will require authentication and some do not, pending on the email server). Please be sure to put a valid from email address.

Also some networks, you will need to put the Untangle's IP address on the allow relay.

After setting all this up, run the email test (try one internal email address and one external).

If the email works, uninstall the reports module off the rack, and reinstall. Make sure to write down the email addresses on the reports module, just in case.

If the email does not work, you will need to check out the logs:
To trouble shoot this, if you have SSH access (command line), you can check the mail log by typing this:

    less /var/log/exim4/mainlog

***Just found out that if you have a special character on the name (using the branding manager), that will cause the reports to not generate and/or sent out.***
to be understood, you must first understand. :)

Following the helpful advice in the original post of this thread, I discovered the reason I was not receiving reports via e-mail.

The exim log complained that the e-mail was too big...

    2010-02-18 03:20:54 rejected MAIL FROM:<[email protected]> H=localhost (localhost.localdomain) [127.0.0.1]: message too big: size=63835195 max=52428800

After unchecking the "Attach Detailed Report Logs..." setting, I have received a report each day.

    Good luck,

    Scott

        boyan.sharic,
I think that the message was to big.
Most Email servers can set a Message limit.

i did everything that gotkimchi said and reports really were sent to e-mail...BUT only if I turn off "Attach Detailed Report Logs to Email"

if that option is on - no e-mail.

                OS X Email Issue

The way the report attachments are sent, OS X Email will download the message (all of the data is there) but it will not show up in the message as an attachment. Stealth reports? :-) Apple has verified this issue. Please take a look at the way the file is being attached so us OS X users can go back into Happy Camper Land.

Today, we were investigating this very issue for a customer. They would receive the email see that was very large in size but their client wouldn't show an attachment. In the course of troubleshooting we added ourselves to the reports distribution list.

This very same email that the client couldn't open, opened for us in the following email clients:

                  Thunderbird version 2.0.0.16 (20080707) on OS X
                  Outlook 2007 on Windows XP
                  mutt on debian
                  Mail on OS X - Version 4.2 (1078)
Outlook Web Access - Exchange 2007

This message was sent directly from the customer untangle, filtered by our untangle for spam/anti-virus and delivered to our unix mail front end. It was then passed on to our exchange server.

We did have one system in the network that couldn't open the attachment, but that turned out to be an issue with AVG anti-virus mangling the mime encoding.

It still appears that the issues with hidden attachments is happening in transit between the untangle sending the message and the client reading it. Messages sent unmodified from the untangle have always been viewed normally.

For those interested, here is what the mime encoding should look like. Yours should be similar, if they aren't, something in the path has modified the message.

I've noticed that if I have UT send them to gmail, and then forward then back to my email, they work fine. Not the solution I'm looking for, but it beats nothing.

Please read my post. There is no bug. There is no issue with OS X Mail reading these attachments.

There is an issue with some third party anti-virus programs unpacking the message and repacking it.

Every time we've seen someone complain of this issue it turns out that somewhere along the line some system has disassembled the email and reassembled it. The emails that these folks present to us show MIME encodings that were not created by untangle.

We are unable to reproduce this issue in house with the exception of one workstation that was running a copy of AVG Free. Disabling AVG "fixed" the issue.

I am looking forward to your detailed analysis of the bug then. That would really help us in solving it.

I can do no more. We have looked at this problem and come to the conclusion that it is NOT an untangle issue.

Maybe I'm not being clear. The issue is that something along the line is unpacking the MIME encoded PDFs and repacking them. During this repackaging, the MIME encoding gets mangled and the PDFs aren't seen as attachments by several mail programs.

However, emails sent directly from the untangle without any further processing always open in every email client tried. Always and without fail.

If you could give me some raw email headers w/attachment encodings for example and/or your complete environment (mail server, untangle email settings), we could maybe get to the bottom of this. Since you've been unwilling to do so I really can't do anymore to help.
