  • Cloud relay emailed reports stopped coming

    Hello Forums,

In the past few months, my licensed untangle installs that use the cloud relay feature have stopped sending daily reports. I ran the email test function from those installs and they all show this error after I hit send. I have tried several emails and domains in the from and to fields, no difference between them. Is the cloud relay feature being removed?

This option is not reliable due to the nature of SMTP. Alternatively you can configure a notification profile in ETM Dashboard and configure notifications from alerts received. More info here

Thanks for the contribution BC. Some previous documentation I saw had stated that the cloud relay option didn't use SMTP, which is why its an option.

If we aren't able to get this existing feature working then the ETM dashboard notification alerts seem to be an alright alternative.

Oddly enough, SMTP is a very old and well understood protocol. There is another way around this that I have found: use gmail as your relay.

First, you will need to configure your gmail to take emails from an app. This will give your app it's own special password that is unique to this app. Much better idea than sharing your normal gmail account credentials.

If you are using your personal account for a business, you will want to first create a new gmail account specifically for this purpose. So login to that new account and send an email just to make certain all is right with the account.

Now login to the gmail account and go into the Google Account settings. It can be found under the top right of the screen, in the 3x3 grid icon.

Once there, select "Security". Then to find the apps password section, enter "apps" into the "Search" window at the top, and then select the highlighted item.

This is the easiest way to get into this function, as they are often changing where it is in the UI. You will not see this option unless you have enabled "2-Step Authentication", so go fix that first.

Now you will see a menu something like this. You can see that I have already created my password. Google nicely shows you the last time this was used, a useful bit of information when trying to resolve mail issues. You will need to click "Select App", then "Other (Custom Name)" and then enter a name for the password. Guess what I chose?

Now it will give you the random password it has created for your app. This password is formatted into 4 different 4 character fields so that it is easier to write down. The actual password is all this characters concatenated with no white space. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT.

Now go into untangle, and set up your email server like this:

Click "Save" in the bottom right corner, then click "Email Test" to make certain it all works. Now your reports will arrive in the correct email inbox, with a minor difference. Whatever "Email From Address" you chose will not be used, as gmail's servers will not impersonate a different account.

Let me know if you run into any problems with IPV6 issues. I hit that and figured out a config solution that isn't hard to implement.
